still a common way of distributing malware. Some of it is delivered via traditional spam and some via phishing spam. Here’s a look at the top 10 types of email sent via spam:
1. Email-Worm.Win32.Mydoom.m- This malware has one very specific purpose, and that’s to harvest as many emails as possible and distribute itself to them. Mydoom1 and Netsky below, behave in a similar way and all are considered worms.
2. Email-Worm.Win32.Mydoom.l - An email harvesting worm.
3. Email-Worm.Win32.Netsky - An email harvesting worm.
4. Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.g t- While also considered a worm, Bagle is more sophisticated. It too collects email addresses and sends itself to everyone in the infected computer’s address book, but in addition to that it downloads other malware such as rootkits and banking Trojans.
5. Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen - This malware presents itself as an HTML page designed to look like the legit site of a popular bank and uses phishing techniques in an attempt to get the victim to turn over personal info such as banking logons and passwords.
6. Trojan.HTML.Fraud.fc - This is very similar to the above malware except it is a spear phishing attack that targets customers of a Brazilian bank.
7. Packed.Multi.MultiPacked.gen - This malware downloads other malware and may deliver fake anti-virus software or steal personal info.
8. Packed.Win32.Katusha.n - This malware is very dangerous and can cause a lot of damage.. It delivers both a backdoor Trojan that can allow an attacker to take complete control of your PC plus a fake anti-virus program. Web surfing is monitored and personal info stolen.
